Speaking to the fathers by the prophets of HIS Word

How did GOD speak to the
fathers in the early days?

From (Hebrews 1:1,2), we read that GOD at sundry times, or on different occasions, and many ways, revealed HIS Will in the days of old to the fathers by the prophets. HE has revealed HIS Will to them through the witness of nature, and through visions and dreams. And on one occasion, "...Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard [it].

"(Now the man Moses [was] very meek, above all the men which [were] upon the face of the earth.) And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood [in] the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, [I] the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, [and] will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses [is] not so, who [is] faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed" (Numbers 12:1-9).

Notice that whenever The LORD spoke by HIS Word to any of the prophets, or through them to the people, the prophet of The LORD repeated Word for Word what he, or she heard of The LORD by HIS Word. It was made clear in the book of Numbers what The LORD said by HIS Word to Moses, Aaron and Miriam. The Word repeated and made The THOUGHTS of GOD known unto them saying, "If there be a prophet among you, [I] the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, [and] will speak unto him in a dream. But of Moses, HE said by HIS Word, that HE will speak mouth to mouth, or One Messenger to another, not in dark sayings, or riddles, or parables, but he shall behold The Similitude, or The Form, or The Image of HIM, WHO cannot be seen by men. The LORD revealed HIS Will to men also through angels and through HIS Law in commandments written upon the tables of the heart, through which HE speaks to the conscience of men to know the right from the wrong.

After being confronted by Nathan the prophet of the wrong he had done, David testified in prayer to The LORD and said, "...Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done [this] evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, [and] be clear when thou judgest.

"Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; [that] the bones [which] thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

"Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me [with thy] free spirit. [Then] will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: [and] my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise" (Psalms 51:1-17).

In studying David's prayer to The Father, we find that he recognized that it was possible for him to loose The Spirit of GOD, Who was in him. This reveals to us that GOD communicated to men not only through the conscience of the mind, but by The Holy Spirit, Who is Most Holy, because of HIS abiding presence in Him, and through Whom, HE speaks to the mind and conscience of men, to reveal HIS Will. From this verse of Scripture in Psalm, many would jump to conclude that this verse that speaks of The Holy Spirit is more evidence that they have been right all along in believing that The Holy Spirit is the third member of The GODHEAD, Who has been with GOD The Father, and The Son of GOD from the beginning.

To jump to this conclusion without first studying That Which GOD has revealed to us in HIS Word, would be to miss The Truth to arrive at the wrong conclusions by men. I would note also that this is not the one verse that is viewed incorrectly by many in the Christian world. It is however, one of the many verses that are viewed incorrectly because of the one verse that is misinterpreted. This verse reveals to us that The Holy Spirit is the means by Whom GOD communicated to the fathers in the days of old. It does not indicate whether The Holy Spirit is The FIRST PERSON, Second Person, or The Third Person of The GODHEAD. It only reveals to us that The Spirit can be taken away from those, who once enjoyed The Presence of GOD'S Truth and Wisdom in the heart.

In Studying David's prayer, we find that he speaks of GOD'S Mercy, HIS Loving kindness, HIS Truth and Wisdom, HIS Joy and Gladness, HIS Righteousness and HIS Praise, which are all characteristics of the fruit of The Spirit. David did not recognized that he had departed from The Way of The LORD and was in sin, until The LORD sent HIS Word by Nathan the prophet to speak to him about what he had done. It was the revealing of his sin by The Spirit of GOD through Nathan the prophet that David cried out to The LORD to take not HIS Holy Spirit from him. For GOD by HIS Holy Spirit spoke also by David to the fathers of old, just as Nathan came and spoke to him of what he had done. It was for this reason that David sought to be restored to The LORD with The Right Spirit, as apposed to the wrong spirit that he might speak and teach transgressors of HIS Way of Righteousness, and give praises to HIS Name.

This confirms to us that GOD speaks to us not only by HIS Spirit, but by HIS Spirit, Who speaks HIS Will through those in whom HIS Spirit dwell, who are Holy because of HIS Presence abiding in them. This also confirms the revelation presented by Peter, by whom it was said, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2Peter 1:21).

If we are quick to jump to conclusions by our own understanding, we will never allow The LORD by HIS Spirit to reveal to us HIS Truth, but would run with the enticing words of manís wisdom, which will support and make our traditions appear to be True. We would therefore fail to receive The Testimony of The Word of GOD in our hearts to know HIS Truth and Wisdom appart from the wisdom of men.

The other verse in (Hebrews 1:1,2) says that GOD, "Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds". The question that led to this study and many of the studies on this site is this, "Is GOD speaking to us in these last days by HIS Son, or by someone, whom many are calling The Third Member of The GODHEAD?"

Speaking to us today by HIS Word

Speaking to Moses of the children of Israel, The LORD said by HIS Word, saying, "I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require [it] of him.

"But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him" (Deuteronomy 18:18-22).

It is written in The Word, saying, "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him" (John 1:18). This testimony of The Son of GOD comes to us by way of John, who was one of His disciples. He revealed this to us not by the enticing, or presumptuous words of manís wisdom, but by the revelation given to him by Him, Who declared The Father and was sent by HIM as That Prophet, Who would speak HIS words. Through John, The Word also reveal to us and said, "There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

"Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than [that] of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" (John 5:32-39).

As John bore witness of The Truth, likewise The Scriptures testify and bears witness of Christ and the work He has done and is doing to glorify The Father. For The ONE, WHO truly bears WITNESS of Christ, is The Father HIMSELF, WHO sent Him to finish the work, which bears witness of Him in the world. And speaking of the work of salvation, which is reserved in heaven, Peter revealed The Key from heaven on how The Father is able to accomplish this work in us.

He testified and said of us, "Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

"Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow" (1Peter 1:8-11).

Today we search The Scriptures to receive The Revelation of our salvation in Christ, Whom we see not, that His revelation in our hearts might build our faith, which is more precious than gold, which shall perish. But the prophets of old searched and enquired of the meaning and the manner in which The Spirit of Christ in them testified beforehand of the things He would suffer in us, and The Grace and Glory that would come to those, who believe at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

Notice the witness of Peter, who believed that The Spirit that testified of The LORD through the prophets, was Christ, through Whom The Father testified and bore witness of The Truth, Who came to men. Peter further testified of the searching of the prophets and said, "Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

"Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:12-16).

Notice that the prophets did not preach the gospel, or The Testimony of Christ by the enticing words of mans wisdom. Neither did they present and report to us the things of GOD by the private interpretations of men. But by The Holy Ghost, or The Spirit of Christ, Who was in them, that He might reveal to us in the last days The Things concerning Himself, Which even the angels desired to look into and understand. As He call the prophets to be Holy that He might bear Witness of The Things of Himself through them, likewise, He has called us to be Holy as He is Holy, through Whom The Father bears WITNESS to us through Him.

In reflecting on the dilemma in receiving The Testimony of Christ, we find evidence presented in the writings of Ellen G. White to support The Testimony of The Word through the prophets of old. Accepted by many to be a modern day prophet of GOD to present HIS Word, she wrote and said,

"It is true that in every generation God had His agencies. Even among the heathen there were men through whom Christ was working to uplift the people from their sin and degradation. But these men were despised and hated. Many of them suffered a violent death. The dark shadow that Satan had cast over the world grew deeper and deeper.

"Through heathenism, Satan had for ages turned men away from God; but he won his great triumph in perverting the faith of Israel. By contemplating and worshiping their own conceptions, the heathen had lost a knowledge of God, and had become more and more corrupt. So it was with Israel. The principle that man can save himself by his own works lay at the foundation of every heathen religion; it had now become the principle of the Jewish religion. Satan had implanted this principle. Wherever it is held, men have no barrier against sin.

"The message of salvation is communicated to men through human agencies. But the Jews had sought to make a monopoly of the truth, which is eternal life. They had hoarded the living manna, and it had turned to corruption They robbed God of His glory, and defrauded the world by a counterfeit of the gospel. They had refused to surrender themselves to God for the salvation of the world, and they became agents of Satan for its destruction.

"The people whom God had called to be the pillar and ground of the truth had become representatives of Satan. They were doing the work that he desired them to do, taking a course to misrepresent the character of God, and cause the world to look upon Him as a tyrant. The very priests who ministered in the temple had lost sight of the significance of the service they performed.

From this writing, we could see how The Things of GOD in The Testimony of Christ were lost to the hearts of men by the enticing words of manís wisdom. Satan urged men on in their private interpretations that we might loose The Knowledge of GOD and he, by the slight of hand might be glorified as God in the place of GOD. That Which GOD had once revealed to man through HIS Son, many today are finding It hard to receive, because they do not know what the church had lost during "The Dark Ages". If Christ is The Light and Life of man, and men lost The Light of Truth by contemplating and worshiping their own conceptions, then by their private interpretations of The Word, they replace The Light of Truth in the heart with the darkness of Satan's deception.

The private interpretations of men had led the world to an age of darkness of not knowing and understanding The Light of Truth, Whom GOD had once revealed to men. By loosing The Truth in the heart, the work that Christ is willing to do in and through us would be misrepresented, to cause us to mis-represent GOD both to ourselves and to others. As Christ has spoken to us in these last days, and has called us all to be holy, let us be holy by His indwelling Presence that He might represent The Father in Him to us and through us to others. Amen.
