Will you be Among
The Elect? or The Lost?

Although Abraham lived not in Sodom, he had family living in Sodom. And he co-labored with God by interceding by his prayer of intercession on their behalf, to save them from the judgment that was to fall upon Sodom and Gomorrah, that they would not be lost with the wicked. And because of his interceding to GOD by speaking to HIS Word, Who revealed Himself to him, angels were sent to influence those, who would be saved by receiving the message of warning, to come out of that city, which was to be destroyed, because of the sin therein. Only those, who responded to the message of warning, were able to escape the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

There are messages of warning being given to our world today, but with all the noise of the distractions of the world, to keep the minds of men and women from receiving the messages of warning, to be saved, do men and women respond to the messages, to come out from among them and be saved, to be GOD’S Elect? Speaking through Paul to the church in his day, GOD said by HIS Word to them, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

The Message of GOD’S Word has not changed for us today. Yet, many do not realize how much of the ways of Sodom and Gomorrah, we are allowing to seep into our hearts, to change us daily, to fit the standards of the world, by the influence that comes into our hearts from the world. We do not realize how much we feed upon the world, by what we watch and hear on television day and night, or from our computers, if it is not centered on The Word of GOD. And how little we are changed by What we feed upon from The Word of GOD once a week, to change our hearts by our beholding Him in our study of HIS Word.

Do you have family members living in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah today? Are you living in Sodom among those, who are not responding to the call of GOD’S Word? Speaking of Abraham, who lived out on the plain of the land, and Lot, who lived in the city of Sodom, it is said of them, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:2).

And Jesus said to His disciples, “…Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:4, 5). For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if [it were] possible, even the elect. But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things” (Mark 13:22, 23).

Because many in the world do not see where they are drifting while they are in the world, it is not until they come out of the world that they can see the direction that the world is moving, like a swift current moving down stream to a water fall. Like Lot, who pitched his tent towards Sodom, and in the flow of time, he moved into a house in Sodom, many are being swept down stream, to loose the standards that they one held, as part of their beliefs.

In the devotional study on “Countdown for Sodom”, which is written by Ellen G. White, she wrote of Abraham and his interceding on the behalf of his family living in Sodom. She said, "And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that [are] therein? That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Genesis 18:23-25)

"Abraham had honored God, and the Lord honored him, taking him into His counsels, and revealing to him His purposes. "Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?" said the Lord. . . . And the man of faith pleaded for the inhabitants of Sodom. Once he had saved them by his sword, now he endeavored to save them by prayer. . . . With deep reverence and humility he urged his plea. . . . Himself a sinner, he pleaded in the sinner's behalf. Such a spirit all who approach God should possess. Yet Abraham manifested the confidence of a child pleading with a loved father. He came close to the heavenly Messenger, and fervently urged his petition.

"Though Lot had become a dweller in Sodom, he did not partake in the iniquity of its inhabitants. Abraham thought that in that populous city there must be other worshipers of the true God. . . . Abraham asked not once merely, but many times. Waxing bolder as his requests were granted, he continued until he gained the assurance that if even ten righteous persons could be found in it, the city would be spared. Love for perishing souls inspired Abraham's prayer. While he loathed the sins of that corrupt city, he desired that the sinners might be saved. His deep interest for Sodom shows the anxiety that we should feel for the impenitent. We should cherish hatred of sin, but pity and love for the sinner.

"All around us are souls going down to ruin as hopeless, as terrible, as that which befell Sodom. Every day the probation of some is closing. Every hour some are passing beyond the reach of mercy. And where are the voices of warning and entreaty to bid the sinner flee from this fearful doom? Where are the hands stretched out to draw him back from death? Where are those who with humility and persevering faith are pleading with God for him?" (Conflict and Courage, Page 51)

On the same day that this devotional was presented, on the “Countdown for Sodom”, another devotional for that day was read on being, “Co-Laborers With God”. And the questions that were presented in the first devotional is this; which says, “…where are the voices of warning and entreaty to bid the sinner flee from this fearful doom? Where are the hands stretched out to draw him back from death? Where are those who with humility and persevering faith are pleading with God for him?" Could it be that many are not hearing The Voice of GOD calling, saying, “…Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities” (Revelation 18:4, 5). Do you not hear The Voice of GOD’S Word calling, to come out from among them?

If we the elect of GOD, then we are to hear The Voice of GOD calling by HIS Word. "For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Ellen G. White wrote and said, "Encourage the hearts of those for whom Christ has given His life. Lead them to understand that they are not to depend upon their surroundings for their Christian experience. It will cost you an effort to make them realize their responsibility to become laborers together with God. But consider that Christ, during the years of His earthly ministry, toiled all day, and often without success. Urge upon souls the eternal loss that all must sustain who refuse to give heart and mind and soul unreservedly to Christ. Every day passed in which Christ is refused admittance to the soul, is a day lost. Then show those for whom you labor how much is to be gained by surrender to God.

"Prayer gives to the worker for God spiritual strength to renew the conflict. Here is the source of your greatest strength. God is represented as bending from His place in heaven, watching with living interest those who labor for Him, and waiting to impart His grace to those who supplicate His throne. . . .

"Never forget that you are laborers together with God, and that it is your privilege to be constantly shielded by His grace. Christ is watching with interest every reformatory movement carried forward in the earth. He calls upon everyone who has named His name to be converted daily, that he may work intelligently in His cause, under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. . . .

"It is the purpose of God that His people shall be a sanctified, purified, holy people, communicating light to all around them. But only as they keep the standard uplifted, only as they reveal that the truth they profess to believe is able to influence them for righteousness and to sustain their spiritual life; only as they make the principles of truth a part of their daily lives, can they be a praise and honor to God in the earth. It is the privilege of every Christian to receive grace to enable him to stand firmly for the principles of righteousness in the service of God.--Letter 8, Feb. 14, 1912, to S. N. Haskell." (This Day With God, Page 53)

Notice that only as we keep The Standard uplifted, and as we reveal that The Truth we profess to believe is able to influence the people for righteousness, and to sustain our spiritual life, then only as we make the principles of Truth a part of our daily lives, can we be a praise and honor to God in the earth, to be HIS elect. But if we are dependent upon our surroundings for our Christian experience, and not upon The principles of Truth, Which do not change, then we are bound to follow the ways of the world to be deceived by those, who know not The Truth of GOD and HIS Word.

In the following devotional that speaks of “That Last Night” in Sodom and Gomorrha, when The Scriptures say, "And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly" (2 Peter 2:6), Ellen G. White was led to write to us in these last days to say, "The flames that consumed the cities of the plain shed their warning light down even to our time. We are taught the fearful and solemn lesson that while God's mercy bears long with the transgressor, there is a limit beyond which men may not go on in sin. When that limit is reached, then the offers of mercy are withdrawn, and the ministration of judgment begins.

"The Redeemer of the world declares that there are greater sins than that for which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Those who hear the gospel invitation calling sinners to repentance, and heed it not, are more guilty before God than were the dwellers in the vale of Siddim. And still greater sin is theirs who profess to know God and to keep His commandments, yet who deny Christ in their character and their daily life. In the light of the Saviour's warning, the fate of Sodom is a solemn admonition . . . to all who are trifling with Heaven-sent light and privileges.

"The judgments of God are soon to be poured out upon the earth. "Escape for thy life" is the warning from the angels of God. Other voices are heard saying: "Do not become excited; there is no cause for special alarm." Those who are at ease in Zion cry "Peace and safety," while heaven declares that swift destruction is about to come upon the transgressor. The young, the frivolous, the pleasure loving, consider these warnings as idle tales and turn from them with a jest. Parents are inclined to think their children about right in the matter, and all sleep on at ease. Thus it was at the destruction of the old world and when Sodom and Gomorrah were consumed by fire. On the night prior to their destruction the cities of the plain rioted in pleasure. Lot was derided for his fears and warnings. But it was these scoffers that perished in the flames. That very night the door of mercy was forever closed to the wicked, careless inhabitants of Sodom.

"The same voice that warned Lot to leave Sodom bids us, "Come out from among them, and be ye separate, . . .and touch not the unclean" (2 Cor. 6:17). Those who obey this warning will find a refuge." (Conflict and Courage, Page 53)

Would you wait until you see the Judgments of GOD falling all around you before you will seek for repentance from your direction in sin? It would be to late then to repent of sin, because the door of mercy to GOD’S Grace, Which HE has born long with the transgressors of HIS Law for many generations, would be shut. But because the response to GOD’S Mercy has been put off, with no response to HIS Grace, HE in that day will withdraw HIS offer of Mercy, and begin the ministration of judgments. As The Voice of warning says, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:17, 18). Would you not obey the warning to find and take refuge in The Unfailing Promises of GOD’S Word? And would you not represent GOD’S Message of Grace and Mercy to your friends and family, who are in the cities of Sodom, while HIS GOD’S Door of Grace and Mercy is still open?

I hope that it is your heart felt desire to follow the call of GOD Word, to hear and respond to Him, Who is The Way and The Truth, Who leads all, who follow and receive Him to have Life.
